Little one on it’s way!

Most of you already heard the news by now (while writing this I’m 38 weeks pregnant!) but if not; there is a mini – me on her way! While impatiently waiting to finally meet her I realised I like to write a little blog about this new adventure and chapter in my life that is about to start.

I will tell you a little personal story, which I think people are  not often enough open about.

Becoming a family has been one of my biggest dreams for a long time. For me becoming pregnant one day was not something obvious or something I took for granted, as my mom had been told she couldn’t have children when she was younger. Even though she ended up with three children it still made a huge impression on me as a child.

In my twenties I already realised I had a very irregular period, with very long breaks in between. By then I didn’t think much of it, except that I thought it was quite pleasant not having a period every 4 weeks. Only ten years later I started to realise that it was not normal to have such an irregular period. My mom had the same when she was younger, and I found out I have and that she must have had PCOS which was not very well known by that time.

PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome. It’s a condition that affects women’s hormone levels. It is a common health problem caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. The hormonal imbalance creates problems in the ovaries.

To get pregnant, you have to ovulate. Women who don’t ovulate regularly don’t release as many eggs to be fertilized. PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility in women. Often it is connected with overweight; more than 80% of women with PCOS has overweight, and PCOS leads to overweight because of the hormone levels, but also losing weight can be a way to get rid of the PCOS sometimes. For me this was not the case, it’s probably genetic.
