Christmas in Brazil

After the last competition in Holland and with the PWA Tour for 2013 done, I couldn’t resist to go back to my favorite place in the world; Jericoacoara in Brazil. After my first windsurftrip ever in 2008 to Brazil, I came back every year after that and in the meantime this will be my sixth year here in Jericoacoara. This is where I first got in touch with freestyle and learned almost all my moves, and although it might not even be the best place for freestyle, it’s definitly the best place to be at this time of the year! Wind everyday, sunshine, nice waves for surfing, great people, good atmosfere, and the best food.

I’m in Brazil for almost two months now, and it has been windy every day so far. The first few weeks I was on 3.7 almost everyday, which now slowly changed to 4.0 and 4.4. In the beginning of the trip we have spend a lot of time in different places besides Jericoacoara as there are a lot of other good spots around.  Really flat water spots like Camocim, but also some spots that with good swell coming in can turn into perfect wave spots. Some of the beaches are in the middle of nowhere; sometimes we ended up making a campfire at the beach and sleeping in our boardbags.

It has been good fun sailing in so many different conditions, it makes it possible to try a lot of different moves and at the same time is good for getting more consistent with the moves i can do already. It was so nice spending so much time with a lot of old friends, some I hadn’t seen for a few years, and like always it was great to meet a lot of new people!

There has been two wave competitions in Jeri as well, with one more to go at the end of this month for the whole tournament. With a lot of pro riders training here and some amazing local men, the level of the competition is high and it has been great to watch the men ripping it up in the finals! And there have been a lot of girls competing as well, more than fiveteen girls in the first competition, and with Sarah-Quita and Oda Johanne joining we had three PWA freestyle girls competing in the waves as well.  Both competitions I’ve finished second place, which I’m really happy with! One more to go for the end of the year and hopefully i will finally have my forwardloop on my bad tack fully sorted out by then!

For the first time ever I will not spend Christmas at home with my family, but in the sun and hopefully with a lot of wind here in Jericoacoara! I have to admit I will miss my friends and family a lot, as you can see on the picture a Santa Claus in the sun with a blue sky is not quite the same, but it will be a totally different and interesting experience!
Merry Christmas to all and see you on the water!
